Increase Physical Activity in Your Communtiy
Community Volunteers to be trained to take local action in the fight against
childhood obesity, through increased physical activity"
On the heels of the recent release of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Health's
recommendations regarding Childhood Obesity in Canada, the Active 2010 committee in
Bruce Grey is recruiting a team of local volunteers interested in tackling this alarming
trend. With funding from the provincial Ministry of Health Promotion under the
Communities In Action Fund, 17 recreation departments have teamed with public health
to develop a long term physical activity strategy for Bruce Grey, to be known as "Play in
Bruce Grey", set to launch this Spring. In preparation for this, teams of volunteers will
be trained and will be active in their local communities doing such things as offering
physical activities at local events, establishing locations where people can meet and be
active together and making presentations to community groups in order to raise
awareness and to provide residents opportunities to become more physically active.
These volunteers, called Community Action Networks (CAN) members are individuals
aged 19 and older who feel strongly about the value of regular physical activity and are
able to provide a few hours per month to promote physical activity in their community.
Anyone who is interested in this opportunity should contact your local municipal office
or Jason Weppler with the Grey Bruce Health Unit at 519.376.9420 ext. 408 or
j.weppler@publichealthgreybruce.on.ca
"Play in Bruce Grey" is part of Ontario's Active 2010 which is a comprehensive strategy
to increase participation in sport and physical activity throughout Ontario. Its goal is to
achieve higher physical activity rates and increased sport participation in order to
improve the quality of life in the province.
Let's PLAY in Bruce Grey,
Every Day!
Remember your young days of playing outside from dawn to dusk?
Do you want to see your community energized with this same spirit of:
getting outdoors
having fun
getting re-connected ?
Do you want to see parks filled with kids playing games? Families playing hockey or
skating on backyard rinks? Neighbours walking or biking together?
The Community Action Network in your municipality needs you! Community Action
Networks are new to Grey Bruce. They plan and create opportunities for play and
physical activity in your area. If you're interested in getting your neighbourhood
